Beef isn’t just reserved for steaks or Western BBQ recipes...
Here in Saudi Arabia, we know how to prepare it our own way — bringing out deep flavors with an authentic Arabian touch.
In this recipe, we’ll show you how to prepare beef the traditional Saudi way using rich spices and home-style warmth.
Ingredients:
- 1 kg beef chunks (preferably shoulder or brisket for tenderness)
- 2 finely chopped onions
- 4 cloves of crushed garlic
- 2 chopped fresh tomatoes
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 tbsp oil (vegetable or olive oil preferred)
- 1 tsp mixed spices
- ½ tsp turmeric
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Hot water or broth
Preparation Method:
- In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until soft and golden.
- Add garlic, then tomatoes and tomato paste. Stir well until fragrant.
- Add the beef chunks and sear them until browned on all sides and sealed.
- Sprinkle the spices (mixed spices, turmeric, cinnamon, pepper, and salt), then pour in enough hot water or broth to cover the beef.
- Cover the pot and simmer on low heat for 60 to 90 minutes until the meat is tender and melts in your mouth.
- Serve with fluffy white rice or freshly baked Tamees bread.
Extra Tips:
- For extra flavor and a light crust, finish the dish in the oven for a few minutes.
- You can also turn it into a luxurious tajine by adding potatoes and vegetables before baking — turning it into a complete meal.
